15U Girls Provincial Cup

15U Girls Red

On Saturday November 26, 2011, our 15U Girls Tigers Red played their first OVA tournament of the season in Cambridge.

Our first match was challenging but gave us an opportunity to see the strength of some of our opposition.  We faced the MVC,
a strong team overall.   We weren’t able to play as strong and despite having some good hits we were defeated 25-7 and 25-5.

We started setting up plays and defending well in our second match allowing us to win in 3 sets against Rapids Blue 25-20,22-25 and 15 -13

Playoff Round

We were excited to face Tigers Yellow first in the playoffs.  We started off slow losing our first set 20-25.   Our hits improved and we covered
the court more effectively allowing us to come back and win the second set 25-19.  We took the match in the 3rd set 15-9.

We were defeated in the quarter finals in two straight sets against Lakeside 14-25 and 18-25 moving us to the consolation round with the Hurricane.
We struggled with our serves and were defeated 13-25 and 15-25 finishing 7th overall.

18 U Girls Win Bronze Medal

The girls travelled to Burlington to compete in the first tournament of the year in Burlington.

Seated 3rd in the Championship West division the girls started the day against the Brant Tornadoes,
a team they had basically owned over the past 2 years. The girls found this was a much more talented
team than in years past and they started out quite slowly dropping both two straight sets.

Up next were the always tough Stratford Stingers.

Again there were some glowing moments but the Tigers still hadn't found their groove and dropped this match
two straight sets. This left them 3rd in their pool and would have to play a pre-quarter game in order to advance.
In the pre-quarter they had to play the Toronto Aces and it was a must win inorder to stay in the Championship division.
The girls finally woke up and started to play the way we all knew they could taking care of the Aces in two and setting up the
quarter final game against the Acts Elites. Strong defense led the way and the girls again won in two sets.

The semi final was against the Niagara Rapids,a team the girls had never played against before so they didn't know what to expect.
After taking a couple of 5 point leads in the first set the girls starting making mental errors which cost them a heart breaking loss of 26-28.
The second set was all Rapids dropping the Tigers 11-25. The girls were disappointed but knew they could come back and put every effort
into winning the Bronze.

Entering the gym they found out they would again play Stratford for the bronze and they knew a much better played game than the one in the morning had to be there to win. A back and forth battle in the first left the Tigers at the short end of the stick in the first set losing 23-25. The second set was again a battle and this time it was the Tigers winning 25-23. The final set was much different seeing the girls down 3-8 at the split but this didn't discourage them. Once again the defence played a huge role and the girls fought back point by point to eventually win the set and the bronze medal with a huge come from behind victory 15-13.
Congratulations!!

16U Girls Win Gold in Chatham

The first OVA tournament of the year saw the 16U Tigers Black in Chatham for the 16U Provincial Cup.

The Tigers started against the Chatham Ballhawks Gold team and after a slow start where the girls
allowed Gold to tie the game at 10, the girls then began to serve effectively and went on to win 25-17.
The second game saw the Tigers take an early lead 11-3 and after some difficult time moving past 22
the girls went on to win 25-17. This matched was highlighted by strong play by Nicole and Lauren H.

The next match was against West Lorne and the girls dominated play, winning the match 25-14.
The next match was an even quicker start with the girls taking a 7-0 start behind strong serving
by Hayley and solid play by Laura K. the girls again won 25-14.

Playoff round

First match was against the Forest City Blue team where the girls took quick control of the game behind
strong serving by Paige and a 25-12 win. The next game was tougher as the girls kept fighting led by Emily
Beth the girls went on to a 25-19 victory.

Brantford Tornadoes were next and though the girls struggled to serve they managed to take the first game 25-19.
The next game the girls began by trading points, Lauren K. began to find a groove and took control of the floor,
combined with some beautiful serving by Sara the girls took the match 25-15.

Off to the gold metal game, and the girls were in for a battle against a strong serving Twin Bridges team. After a strong
start the teams traded points back and forth and behind some effective Libero play by Rayna the girls pulled out a
25-21 victory. Twin Bridges was not giving up though and battled the Tigers tough in the second game leading 21-23,
the Tiger rallied back to 23 all. The Tigers learned to finish a game as they took the ball at 24 all and finished the game.

Congratulations Tigers on your gold winning performance.

20112012G16UHumber  16U Girls Compete at Humber College

The Tigers 16U girls started the season in Toronto at the 17U Tournament at Humber College . In the first game the Tigers faced Etobicoke 381 and started strong taking the first game with some effective team play. The girls then dropped the next game and it was an unfortunate sign of things to come. The second match was immediately after that against Toronto West where the girls remained competitive but dropped both games. The girls had a short rest and then it was on to face the Aurora Storm and again dropped both matches.   (Read more...)
